Picking a Marketplace plan carefully

Florida uses the federal exchange, and the health plans sold there are ACA Marketplace plans. Each one includes the essential health benefits, and none of them can refuse you or raise your price over a preexisting condition. A lot of people also qualify for a premium tax credit that brings the monthly bill down.

The details are where people get tripped up. Two silver plans may cost the same each month yet have very different deductibles, networks and drug lists. And an income estimate that misses the mark can mean paying back some of your tax credit at tax time in April.

We put safety first. That means checking the points that lead to problems down the road, guarding the personal information you give us and warning you off plans that only look like Marketplace coverage. There is no fee for the consultation, since the carrier you pick pays us instead of you.

How we help with your Marketplace plan

  1. 01

    Plans from several carriers, compared

We set plans from multiple carriers side by side, showing the premium, deductible, out-of-pocket maximum and copays for each. The tradeoffs sit on one page, so you are not hunting through dozens of screens.

  2. 02

    An honest tax credit estimate

Together we go over the income you expect next year and how many people are on your tax return. Getting that number right up front lowers the odds you will repay credit at tax time.

  3. 03

    Doctor and medication lookups

Share the doctors, clinics and medications you count on. We search each plan's provider directory and drug list for them, so nothing catches you off guard once you are enrolled.

  4. 04

    A check for cost-sharing help

When your income qualifies, a silver plan may bring lower deductibles and copays. We make sure choosing another tier does not cost you that benefit.

  5. 05

    Sign-up help and next steps

We help you finish your enrollment and flag the due date for your first premium, because coverage only begins once it is paid. Visit our office, or take care of everything by phone or video.

Signs it is time to look at Marketplace plans

  • You lost job-based coverage

Leaving a job usually opens a special enrollment period. You generally have 60 days to pick a plan, so it pays to start early.

  • Your premium jumped at renewal

Plans and prices change every year. Letting coverage roll over automatically can leave you in a plan that no longer fits.

  • You are self-employed or between gigs

Freelancers and small business owners often buy their own coverage. A tax credit may make a Marketplace plan more affordable than you expect.

  • Your income or family changed

A raise, a new baby, a marriage or a divorce can change your tax credit. Updating your application promptly helps you avoid a repayment surprise.

  • A plan offer seems too cheap

If someone pitched you a low-cost plan that skips questions about health history, it may not be ACA coverage at all. We can tell you what you are really looking at.

How a consultation works

  1. 1

    A relaxed first call

You call us and we talk about who needs coverage, your doctors, any regular medications and what you can comfortably spend each month. No pressure and no fee.

  2. 2

    Your options, compared

We bring back side-by-side plan options and explain the tradeoffs in plain words. If a bronze plan or a silver plan with cost-sharing help makes more sense, we say so and show why.

  3. 3

    Enrollment, done safely

Once you choose, we help you enroll and double-check names, birth dates and income figures. Small typos are a common reason applications stall.

  4. 4

    Help after you sign up

Questions come up later, like a life change mid-year or a renewal notice in the fall. You can call us back and we will look at it with you.

What sets the price of a Marketplace plan

Your monthly cost depends on the plan you pick and the tax credit you receive. Our help is free either way, since the carrier pays us. These are the main things that move your price.

Expected income and family size
Your premium tax credit is based on the income you expect this year and how many people are on your tax return. Lower incomes generally get more help.
Metal tier
Bronze plans have lower monthly costs and higher deductibles, while gold and platinum do the opposite. Only silver plans come with cost-sharing reductions.
Age and tobacco
Premiums rise with age, and carriers may charge more for tobacco use. Your health history has no effect on the price.
Network size
Plans with narrower networks often have lower monthly premiums. That only helps if your doctors are in them, so checking that comes first.

Common questions about Marketplace coverage

When am I allowed to enroll in a Marketplace plan?

Open enrollment each year typically opens November 1 and closes in mid-January. Outside that period, you need a qualifying life event such as moving, marrying, having a baby or losing other coverage. Most of those windows last 60 days, so call us shortly after the change.

Is there a chance I will have to repay my tax credit?

That can happen if your actual income ends up higher than your estimate, since the credit is reconciled on your tax return. We help you make a realistic estimate and remind you to report income changes during the year.

Does signing up through you cost more than doing it alone?

No. Your Marketplace premium is the same both ways, and the consultation is free because the carrier you choose pays us.

Are short-term plans and Marketplace plans the same?

No. A short-term plan can deny you because of your health history and frequently skips benefits like mental health or maternity care. We work only with real ACA coverage and will tell you plainly if an offer you received falls short.

Can you help if I live outside Oldsmar?

Yes. We have clients across the area, including Palm Harbor, Westchase and Clearwater. Meet us at our office or talk with us by phone or video.
